Balfolk: Fairy Court
Balfolk is back in Enschede!
Get ready for the Balfolk Fairy Court on October 11th.
Do you want to dance in the ballroom of the fairies? Then come join us, whether you're dressed as a fantastical creature or as a lost civilian who suddenly stumbled into the fairy realm. Everyone is welcome, even if you don’t know how to dance (yet)!
Balfolk is a dance style based on Western European folk dances that were nearly lost but have been revived with modern influences. A Balfolk ball is a social dance event where you can join without a partner. People generally switch partners throughout the event, and not all dances require a partner anyways, there are also group dances and chain dances.
To make sure everyone can join in comfortably, there will be a dance introduction before the ball, where some of the most common dances will be explained. The dances are all very accessible, so even with two left feet you’ll be able to enjoy yourself!
To keep our energy up for dancing, we’ll have a potluck picnic between the two music sets. This is a picnic where everyone brings a dish to share, creating a cozy buffet of various foods. You can make a tasty quiche or salad, but desserts like a beautiful cake are also very appreciated. As long as everyone brings enough food to feed themselves, there should be plenty for all.
Don’t forget to bring your own plate and cutlery, and if your dish needs serving utensils, please bring those too. Since we may have guests with allergies, it’s appreciated if you include a small note with your dish indicating things like whether it’s vegetarian or contains gluten, etc.
Schedule for the ball:
14:00 – Dance Introduction by Leo Visser
15:30 – Ball starts with Wim te Groen
17:30 – Potluck Picnic
19:00 – Ball with Adriano Sangineto
We’re thrilled to have two top artists performing for us:
- Wim te Groen is a pianist from the Netherlands who plays beautiful waltzes and mazurkas (and other dances too). Every year at the Cadansa Balfolk Festival, his performance is a highlight that fills the room with dancers eager to experience it. Now you have the chance to enjoy and dance to his music in the stunning audio zaal of the Vrijhof!
-Adriano Sangineto, known from the group Lyradanz, is a harpist from Italy currently on a world tour for his new project. On his way to the International Harp Festival in Nijmegen, he’s stopping by to share his latest compositions and show that the harp is much more than just soft background music! Get ready for romantic dances as well as energetic tunes!
If you’re coming by car, you can park at the U Parkhotel next to the Vrijhof, where plenty of parking spaces are available.
